Everything beyond the essentials can wait until you know how you like to work. Here is what to buy first, what to add later, and what to skip.

Add next, once you're cutting regularly
- Clipper guards for consistent lengths and blends: FXDE Clipper Guard, R249.99
- A fade clipper when your fades need a tighter blade: the Master Fade Clipper Pro Series, R1,999.99
- Spare blades so a dull blade never stops a cut: from R299.99
What apprentices shouldn't spend money on yet
- The most expensive clipper in the shop. Learn on a reliable mid-priced clipper. You'll know exactly what you want to upgrade to after a few hundred cuts.
- Home grooming clippers. They're cheaper, but they aren't built for back-to-back clients and will slow your progress.
- Unbranded marketplace clippers. Fakes of popular clipper brands are common. Buy from the brand or an official distributor so your warranty is valid.
Five habits that make tools last
- Brush out and disinfect your tools after every client
- Oil clipper and trimmer blades every day
- Charge cordless tools overnight, not between every cut
- Keep guards and blades in the bag, not loose on the station
- Replace blades when they pull, instead of pressing harder
Supporting the next generation
For every 10 FXDE clippers sold, FXDE donates one to apprentice barbers and community training programmes across South Africa. See how the giveback works. Apprentices can also test their skills at the FXDE Barber Battle, a live barber competition.
