If your clipper is already struggling, Black Friday looks like the perfect excuse to replace it before the December rush. It can be. It can also be an expensive way to buy the wrong tool at a price that was never as low as it looked.

Why Black Friday 2026 needs a plan, not a reflex

Shoppers are starting early this year. Google Trends data reported in October showed South African search interest in Black Friday running 30% higher over the past three months than in the same period last year, with people researching products and comparing prices well before the day (BizCommunity, 19 October 2026).

The sale has also stretched. Smile FM reports that Black Friday has turned into a month-long retail period often called "Black November", and that discounts are in many cases smaller than they used to be (Smile FM). A longer sale gives you time to check a price properly, so use it.

Is the "was" price real?

A big crossed-out number proves nothing by itself. Before you trust a discount:

  • Look up the same clipper on at least two other sites, and note what it cost earlier in November or in October.
  • Take a screenshot of the advert and the price today, so you have a record if the discount later turns out to be misleading.
  • Ask the seller what the previous selling price was. If they cannot tell you, treat the discount as decoration.
  • Check that the stock is real. Advertising a low price on goods the seller cannot actually supply is what the rules on bait marketing are aimed at.

If a price turns out to be misleading, you are not powerless. A consumer-rights attorney quoted by the Weekend Argus noted that bait marketing is illegal under Section 30 of the Consumer Protection Act and can be reported to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud or the National Consumer Commission (Weekend Argus).

We hold FXDE to the same standard: every special shows the previous price crossed out beside the new one. The FXDE Barber Bag, for example, was R350 and is R280 for Black November. You can see every current special on our specials page.

Five things a discount cannot fix

  • Battery and runtime. A cordless clipper that dies at 4pm is no bargain. Match the listed runtime to the number of clients you cut in a day, and read our cordless vs corded guide if you are unsure which suits your shop.
  • Spare blades and parts. Find out whether replacement blades are sold in South Africa and what they cost. A cheap clipper with an expensive, hard-to-find blade costs more over a year. Our blade types guide explains what to look for.
  • The warranty, and who honours it. Ask how long it lasts, who repairs the clipper locally, and what you need to show. Keep the invoice. FXDE clippers come with a 1 year warranty.
  • What is in the box. Guards, oil, a charger and covers are sometimes sold separately. Our guard sizes guide shows which guards you will actually use.
  • When it arrives. Many Black Friday orders are placed at the same time, so check the delivery estimate. A clipper that lands after your December bookings have started is no use to you.

Should you buy on the day, or wait?

If your current clipper is failing, buy early in the sale rather than on the last day, so delivery and any teething problems are sorted before your December rush. Our December rush checklist covers the rest of the preparation.

If your clipper still works well, waiting costs you nothing. A clipper you do not need is not a saving at any price, and a good discount on the wrong model is still the wrong model.

Where FXDE fits in

If you are replacing a clipper before December, start with our guide to the best professional barber clippers in South Africa, which compares tools without a sale price attached. FXDE's own Black November specials on accessories and shop equipment, including capes, the barber bag, the rubber mat and the tri-fold mirror, run until 23:59 on 30 November 2026. If a deal elsewhere suits your work better, take it. A good deal is one you are still happy with in March.
